The Modern Driving Range Could Be Your Biggest Opportunity
Everybody in golf is talking about the growth of off-course golf. Simulators, driving ranges, entertainment venues, social golf concepts. And honestly, I think a lot of traditional golf operators are looking at this completely wrong. They see it as competition, when in reality it might be the biggest opportunity they’ve had in years.
The reason places like Topgolf work is not because people suddenly became obsessed with golf itself. It works because people enjoy the experience around it. You show up with friends, grab food and drinks, hit balls, compete for points, laugh, spend a couple of hours there, and nobody cares whether you’ve ever played golf before. That’s what traditional golf has missed for a long time.
A great example is Golf Ranch. What they’ve done is actually pretty simple. They’ve taken poor or average driving ranges and turned them into places where people genuinely want to spend time. Nothing overly fancy. Not massive CapEx. But the execution is excellent. Good atmosphere, food trucks, drinks, music, lighting, relaxed vibe, people hanging out and hitting balls without feeling pressure. They understood that most people are not looking for “golf practice.” They are looking for something fun to do.
That’s where traditional golf clubs, especially municipal and daily fee clubs, should pay attention. Most already have the infrastructure. They have the land, the driving range, the parking, the clubhouse, the terrace, food and beverage, everything. But many still operate with a mindset built entirely around tee times and existing golfers.
The problem is that for a huge amount of normal people, golf clubs still feel intimidating. People genuinely don’t know if they are even allowed to enter. They don’t know the rules, the dress code, whether they need a membership, or if they are “good enough” to be there. That fear alone blocks a massive audience. But when you create an environment where everybody feels welcome, where you can come hit balls, grab a beer, eat tacos, bring friends or family, suddenly golf becomes approachable.
And that’s where the real opportunity sits. Somewhere between traditional golf clubs and pure entertainment venues. Because over time, part of these so-called off-course golfers become actual golfers. The problem with places like Topgolf is that the distance to actual golf is still mentally very far. You can go there for years without ever really taking the next step toward a real golf course.
But when this kind of relaxed, social, entertainment-driven experience exists at an actual golf property, something different starts happening. People get curious. They start looking at the course. They start asking questions. “What do I need to do to actually go play there?” That’s the bridge traditional golf has been missing for a long time.
The driving range becomes the gateway to green grass golf. And the operators who understand this early, especially municipal and daily fee courses, have a huge opportunity to build something that attracts an entirely new generation into golf.
If you want an honest look at how your driving range, clubhouse, and overall property could attract a completely new type of golf customer, book a call. Sometimes a single structured conversation is enough to clearly see where the biggest opportunity actually sits.
